Background of the Study
Academic counseling plays a critical role in the success of university students by helping them navigate their academic journeys, make informed decisions, and improve their performance. Traditional academic counseling relies on face-to-face interactions, which, though valuable, can be time-consuming and inconsistent in addressing the unique needs of each student (Garba & Mohammed, 2024). As universities grow and student populations increase, the demand for personalized academic counseling has become more challenging to meet using traditional methods. AI-based systems offer a promising solution by providing personalized, data-driven recommendations tailored to each student's academic profile, strengths, and weaknesses (Oluwaseun & Daniel, 2025). These AI systems can analyze students' academic histories, predict future performance, and provide real-time advice on course selection, study habits, and career paths (Olaoye et al., 2023).
Federal University, Wukari, in Wukari LGA, Taraba State, is an ideal case study for exploring the potential of AI-based academic counseling systems. The university has a diverse student population, many of whom face challenges in making informed academic choices due to limited guidance and counseling resources. Implementing an AI-based counseling system can improve student retention, academic success, and overall student satisfaction (Yusuf & Haruna, 2024). By incorporating machine learning algorithms, the system can continuously adapt to individual students' academic needs, offering targeted advice and interventions to enhance their academic journeys.
Statement of the Problem
At Federal University, Wukari, traditional academic counseling methods are unable to provide the level of personalized attention that students require, leading to suboptimal academic outcomes for many students. The existing counseling system is overwhelmed by the growing student population, and students often receive generalized advice that does not consider their unique academic challenges and strengths. This study aims to develop an AI-based academic counseling system that will offer personalized, data-driven recommendations to students, improving academic performance and student engagement.
Objectives of the Study
To design an AI-based system that provides personalized academic counseling for students at Federal University, Wukari.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the AI-based counseling system in enhancing students' academic performance and satisfaction.
To assess students' acceptance and willingness to adopt AI-based counseling tools at Federal University, Wukari.
Research Questions
How effective is the AI-based system in providing personalized academic counseling for students at Federal University, Wukari?
What impact does the AI-based academic counseling system have on students' academic performance and engagement?
How do students perceive the use of AI-based counseling systems in their academic decision-making?
Research Hypotheses
AI-based academic counseling will significantly improve students' academic performance at Federal University, Wukari.
Students will have higher satisfaction with AI-based counseling compared to traditional counseling methods.
The adoption of AI-based academic counseling will lead to better academic outcomes and student retention at Federal University, Wukari.
Significance of the Study
The study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the application of AI in education, particularly in academic counseling. The results could provide Federal University, Wukari, and other universities with a framework for adopting AI tools to enhance student success and retention.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and evaluation of an AI-based academic counseling system at Federal University, Wukari, located in Wukari LGA, Taraba State. The study will be limited to undergraduate students, and data on students' academic performance and satisfaction will be collected through surveys and interviews.
